Common Questions
How is the 2024 Redesign different from 2014?
This version uses more metal components to improve performance and make it easier to build. Documentation has also improved, with a full CAD model to generate drawings and DXF files.
Can I change the start and end sizes?
Part dimensions are tightly related and need to be adjusted in sync, so it's definitely possible, but not recommended unless you're ready to invest significant effort.
Can I print the plans on A4 paper?
Yes. The plans were written on Letter (8.5x11 in) paper, but slight zoom changes have no effect on most pages. Template pages do need to be a specific size, so they have a 125 mm (5 in) reference square to make sure it's printing at 1:1 scale.
Can it be motorized?
Hasn't been explored in detail but very possible. Requires two, one for skirt and one for rotation. Introduces additional safety considerations.
Isn't this patented?
It was, the original expanding table idea by Robert Jupe in 1835 and the modern self storing iteration by David Fletcher in 2002, #GB2396552. The 2002 patent was filed in Great Britain and expired 5 years later in 2007 due to “non-payment of renewal fee.”
Is the 2024 Redesign an "update" to the original model from 10 years ago and thus free to previous customers?
No, it was redeveloped from scratch and has significant changes and improvements.
